Robert Deckey, a New York City-based artist, brings a unique perspective shaped by his diverse experiences and education. His abstract paintings capture the dynamic pulse of the city, while his life drawings offer an intimate glimpse into the lives of New Yorkers, particularly the city's theatrical performers. This duality in his work reflects a profound connection to the urban environment and its inhabitants.

Growing up in Rhode Island, Deckey was immersed in the arts from a young age, influenced by his father, a professor at RISD, and the artist-supervised summer camps where he began creating sculptures from beach debris. As a first-generation American of Syrian descent, his family's journey and the broader themes of freedom and identity are woven into the fabric of his work.

Deckey's global travels have also left a significant mark on his art. From witnessing the turmoil of Tiananmen Square to engaging with South Africa's fight for freedom, these experiences have imbued his work with a sense of global consciousness. The vibrant colors and eastern symbols that appear in his paintings are a testament to the cultural diversity and the ongoing quest for freedom that fuels his creative expression.
